  26. Dial-Up Edition includes all the software you need to get 
  27. started on the Internet:
  28.  
  29.     * Netscape Communicator 4.0, a bundle of Internet software that 
  30.       lets you explore the world wide web, send and receive email, 
  31.       read online newsgroups, and more. 
  32.     * Account Setup, a program that helps you get access to the 
  33.       Internet, even if you have never accessed it before.
  34.     * Connection software that enables your computer to connect to 
  35.       the Internet. 
  36.     * Complete documentation and Help.

  38. To use Dial-Up Edition, follow these steps:
  39.  
  40.     1. Install Dial-Up Edition according to the 
  41.        instructions provided in this document and in the 
  42.        Installation and Setup Guide that accompanies the 
  43.        software.
  44.     2. Use Account Setup to create access to the Internet. 
  45.        Account Setup can help you create an account with an 
  46.        Internet service provider right away. If you already 
  47.        have an Internet account, you can use Account Setup 
  48.        to set up Communicator to access your Internet account. 
  49.        See Chapter 3 of the Installation and Setup Guide for 
  50.        complete instructions.
  51.     3. Connect to your account and explore the Internet.

  53. Before you begin, make sure your computer meets the system 
  54. requirements described in the next section.

  63. To use Dial-Up Edition, your computer must meet the system 
  64. requirements described in this section.

  67. WINDOWS 95, NT, 3.1, AND WFW 3.11 SYSTEMS
  68.  
  69.     * An IBM-compatible computer with the following:
  70.       - A 486/66 (or faster) processor.
  71.       - 25 MB to 35 MB of free hard-disk space. 
  72.       - 16 MB of RAM.
  73.       - 256-color (or better) display.
  74.       - A CD-ROM drive.
  75.     * An internal or external modem with a data-transfer rate of 
  76.       14.4 kbps or faster (check your modem documentation to find 
  77.       out your modem's speed).
  78.     * Access to a telephone line to connect to the Internet; almost 
  79.       any phone line will do. You can even connect from hotel rooms 
  80.       or, in some countries, from pay phones.

  83. MACINTOSH SYSTEMS
  84.  
  85.     * A Macintosh computer with the following:
  86.       - PowerPC processor and running Macintosh 
  87.         Operating System 7.5 (or later).
  88.       - Approximately 25-35 MB of free hard-disk space.
  89.       - 16 MB of RAM. (If you're using a Power Macintosh with 16 MB 
  90.         of RAM, turn on Virtual Memory.)
  91.       - (Optional) Apple Open Transport networking software, version 
  92.         1.1 or later (version 1.1.2 is recommended). To obtain a 
  93.         current release of Open Transport, contact Apple Computer, Inc., 
  94.         or your local software vendor. 
  95.       - A CD-ROM drive.
  96.     * An internal or external modem with a data-transfer rate of 14.4 
  97.       kbps or faster (check your modem manual to find out your modem's 
  98.       speed).
  99.     * Access to a telephone line to connect to the Internet; almost 
  100.       any phone line will do. You can even connect from hotel rooms

  106.                  Installation Instructions

  110. Refer to the Installation and Setup Guide that accompanies Internet 
  111. Access Edition for complete instructions on how to install the product 
  112. and for stroubleshooting tips. General instructions for installing
  113. Dial-Up Edition are provided below.

  116. WINDOWS 95, NT, 3.1, AND WFW 3.11 SYSTEMS

  118.     1. Close all open applications.
  119.     2. Place the Dial-Up Edition CD in your CD-ROM drive. The 
  120.        Installer screen appears.
  121.     3. Click the Install Communicator button. The Installer launches.
  122.     4. Choose a set-up type:
  123.        - Typical (recommended). This choice installs all the software 
  124.          you need for typical Internet use.
  125.        - Custom. This choice lets you install all of Netscape 
  126.          Communicator or individual modules. If you have your own 
  127.          networking software, and you want to create your own Internet 
  128.          Access connection, click this option. If you're connecting to 
  129.          the Internet using a local area network (LAN), you might also 
  130.          choose Custom. Check with your network administrator.
  131.     5. Click Next to move through the remaining Installer screens.
  132.     6. After completing the installation, restart your computer.

  135. MACINTOSH POWERPC SYSTEMS
  136.  
  137.     1. Turn off any virus protection, screen savers, or unneeded 
  138.        extensions, then restart your Macintosh. Use the Extensions 
  139.        Manager control panel to turn off unneeded extensions. Be sure 
  140.        to leave the Apple CD-ROM extension active, or your system 
  141.        won't be able to read the Dial-Up Edition CD.
  142.     2. Insert the Dial-Up Edition CD into your CD-ROM drive.
  143.     3. Double-click the Dial-Up Edition Install icon. 
  144.     4. The Installer launches and displays a welcome screen. Click continue.
  145.     5. Choose an installation type:
  146.        - Easy Install (recommended). This choice installs all the 
  147.          software you need for typical Internet use. 
  148.        - Custom. This choice installs Netscape Communicator or 
  149.          individual modules. If you have your own networking software, 
  150.          and you want to create your own Dial-Up connection, 
  151.          click this option. If you're connecting to the Internet using 
  152.          a local area network (LAN), you might also choose Custom. 
  153.          Check with your network administrator.
  154.        - Note: When doing a Custom install, be sure you select the 
  155.          Internet Setup module or you won't install Account Setup, the 
  156.          dialer software, the online previews, or the Reference Library.
  157.     6. After completing the installation, restart your computer.
